When blending essential oils, a base oil—also known as a carrier oil—is essential. It’s used to dilute the concentrated essential oils, making them safe to apply to the skin. Essential oils are highly potent and can cause irritation or sensitivity if used neat (undiluted), so mixing them with a base oil helps reduce that risk while still delivering their benefits.
Common base oils include sweet almond, jojoba, coconut, grapeseed, and olive oil. Each has its own texture, absorption rate, and skin-nourishing properties, so you can choose one based on your skin type or the purpose of your blend. For example, jojoba is great for oily or acne-prone skin, while sweet almond is gentle and suitable for most skin types.
The typical dilution ratio is about 2–3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon (5ml) of base oil for general use. For sensitive skin or children, it’s best to use a lower concentration.
